This homemade Hot Chocolate Mix Ornament tutorial includes everything you need to make these custom Christmas ornaments including printable tags, a hot cocoa recipe, and variation ideas.
You can put our homemade hot chocolate mix in a Christmas ornament to create a fun gift. You can use either a clear glass ornament or a clear plastic ornament to make these gifts. I prefer to use plastic ornaments so I do not have to worry about them breaking. However, some people prefer to use glass because they don’t want food to come in contact with plastic.
How to Make Hot Chocolate Mix Ornaments
You need to decide how many ornaments you plan to make in advance. The hot cocoa recipe below makes 6 cups. If you add 1/3 cup to each ornament you can make 18 ornaments. However, you can put more of the hot chocolate mix in each ornament and make fewer ornaments.
Items needed:
- 6 – 18 Clear plastic or glass ornaments (I use these clear plastic ornaments)
- Funnel

Hot Cocoa Mix Ornament Variations
You can tailor your homemade hot chocolate mix ornaments to the favorite flavors of the recipients of your gift. Not only does this allow you to create unique flavor combinations, but it can also make your ornament look even more festive.
To make a hot chocolate ornament variation first, pour the hot chocolate mix into the ornament. Then add one or more of the following items on top of the hot cocoa. Then put the ornament hanger back in the ornament. Attach the tag. The try to keep the ornament from shaking around too much so the layers do not get mixed together in advance of giving the gift.
Hot Chocolate Mix Variations
Add a crushed candy cane (Place your candy cane in a plastic bag. Then seal the bag and roll a rolling pin over it until the candy cane is crushed to your desired consistency.)
